Now open: Poke Poke on South Congress Avenue

Poke Poke

The poke poke craze has made its way to land-locked Central Texas. Texas native Jason Mcvearry and wife, Trisha Fortuna, opened Poke Poke recently at 3100 S. Congress Ave. in the former Amy’s Ice Creams space near St. Edward’s University.

The couple, who once lived in Hawaii, started Poke Poke in Venice Beach, Calif. six years ago and moved to Austin two years ago with their child to open a second location. For those not familiar with poke, think a deconstructed complex sushi roll in a bowl, with mounds of beautiful, rough-cut sashimi grade ahi tuna. (You can also get salmon at Poke Poke.)

The tuna — tossed with soy sauce, sesame oil and seeds and onion for a salty, nutty, piquant bite — sits atop a base of white or brown rice (or go “Hawaiian” style with no rice and a little more fish) colored and flavored with your choice of custom ingredients like kale, ginger, macadamia nuts, pickled seaweed and more. In addition to the traditional bowls, there are also specials like the wasabi bowl made with housemade wasabi and white and black sesame seeds. The restaurant also serves acai bowls, made with the tart superfruit acai sorbet and topped with bananas, granola, shredded coconut and honey.

Poke Poke, which also serves beer and wine, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
